Wooden Houses

Wooden buildings represent a comfortable and economical way of housing and just for these reasons, are a rapidly growing market segment, especially in the area of housing construction. Unlike some other European countries, the proportion of wooden buildings is still relatively low in the Czech Republic and also because some myths still exist about these types of buildings.

The term wooden building no longer denotes simply large wooden types of cabins. It can also act, for example, as an object consisting of wooden timber frames of jacketed plate materials which with its wooden structure assists in load transfers. The thermal insulation consists of thermal wool, which represents up to 80% of the building’s envelope. Due to this fact, wooden buildings often require very low energy for their heating. This building system penetrated to us from abroad, where it is very popular among other things, because it is a quick drywall housing construction method. Clean wooden structures with no concrete or brick elements can be built up to five floors. It is a long time that traditional materials like wood, are suitable only for the construction of huts, sheds or gazebos.

A properly designed, implemented, operated and maintained wooden structure has, compared to a “classical” building a number of advantages:

  • Speed of construction

In addition to the base plate, on which wooden structures are most commonly built on, the construction is carried out using a dry process. No technological breaks are therefore necessary. The implementation period ranges at most by several months.

  • More interior space

Construction using timber wood has thinner walls, compared to the conventional building types, while maintaining the same thermal insulating properties. This creates a more open space inside the building.

  • A pleasant interior microclimate

The greatest benefit to the health and comfort of living in low-energy and passive wooden buildings is regeneration - driven by incoming fresh air, which is automatic and ensures a healthy and pleasant climate throughout the year. A major criterion for functionality with low energy intensity is airtightness - that can be achieved in modern wooden buildings even without using sheeting (e.g. by using OSB panels). The wood itself helps to maintain a balanced internal environment, which is able to remove the increased humidity and release it again under dry climate conditions. Thanks to these properties, it increases the overall housing comfort and offers a suitable living environment for people suffering with allergies.

  • The use of ecologically friendly and health-safe materials

Wood is almost a completely recyclable material, and is also classed as a renewable source. Its processing is nature and environmentally friendly. Compared to other major building materials, wood alone is efficient in energy consumption, both during the initial processing and during actual construction, and last but not least in the end of its existence, when energy input is not required for its disposal, but can rather be obtained. As an insulating material, natural material which has similar properties as mineral wool, may be used - such as thermal insulation of industrial hemp.
